Bernice's Gender Neutral Nursery

After all the prep and work that went into preparing for Bernice to be here last year at this time, it was amazing to have the nursery complete. I haven't shared pictures of it yet, so here they are.
All photos by Shawn Finley

 Yarn Painting by Shawn's Mom
This was in his and his sister's rooms when they were babies, too.
I made Bernice's orange curtains just for her.
The Grateful Dead poster I found in Chicago 2 years ago.
When we bought it I had no idea where I would put it. :o)

Dinosaur rocker from my parents matches perfectly!

That rug was the inspiration for the whole room!

Shawn and I painted the chevrons by hand.

This rocking chair in the corner was the one my mom would rock me in when I was a baby.

Special calendar from Bernice's Aunt to keep track of her busiest year.
Vintage Kitten picture from a yard sale I found YEARS and YEARS ago.
Glitter Owl from Shawn's parents topped with custom glitter letters from my parents.
This is one loved little baby!

Of all the cool things about Bernice's room the best thing about it in my opinion is that I think she likes it, too.

The Baby Room is Painted!

Sunday my parents came over and brought brunch with them. We all sat and ate a very delicious meal with them before Shawn and my Dad got down to painting-business. My Mom and I sat around and sewed; she crocheted and I made some more diaper covers. It was a lovely day to have the windows open and the animals lazing around the living room with us.

I know that a while back we took FOREVER deciding which color to paint the baby room and we finally decided on Major Blue by Sherwin Williams. The blue hue is very soothing and captivating. It's bright yet deep, making it look great in both bright and dim light.

After my parents left in the early afternoon we spent the remainder of the day meandering down the hall to peek inside at the baby room time after time just to stare at it. We can't wait until there's a little baby in there; it's getting so real finally and we are so ready.

50 Shades of... Blue

I am virtually sitting in a pile of paint strips. All of them are blue.
I say virtually because they're all in a pile on the Pinterest Baby board.
via
No, we didn't have another ultrasound and see anything... We just like blue. My nursery was blue and I just really love the look of it with the rug for the baby room we bought, so blue is the color we'll paint the walls.

If you all would be so kind as to stroll through the colors below and vote on one at the end, it would be very appreciated!
Here is the reference photo of the rug:

Crochet Baby Hoodie by HiLLjO

Last week I started (and finished) a crochet baby hoodie for our future firstborn. I was trying to hold out until I was actually pregnant to make it, but I could no longer resist that yarn!!!

The pocket opens in the top to stash a bottle, face wipe, or biter biscuit.
Yes, yes I did buy an entire hank of additional yarn to make just this pocket...
If you LOVE this hoodie, it is based off my FREE crochet baby hoodie pattern! If you would like one made for a friend, family member, or even yourself email me!
I even make them in grownup-people sizes!

Mid-Century Modern Thayer High Chair

If you didn't see my Mother's Day post, go see me and my cute mom here. Until this morning all I knew about this chair was that it is beautiful. It's in great condition and even has the wood tray instead of plastic. This morning I learned that this item is a rare antique... and I got it for $20. I don't think anyone would begrudge me not waiting until we were pregnant to buy this.

I cleaned it up with mild soap and water and it sits in the garage currently, waiting for a baby bum to sit. Cleaning it up staved off the baby fever quite well, along with our other plan: every month that we don't get pregnant, we will do something immature and fun that we couldn't do otherwise. For June it's boxed-wine races in teams of 2 with our friends James and Scott. We'll let you know how that goes.

LlamaLlamaLlamaLlama

So the yarn Mama Kitty was rolling around in on Friday is for a baby hoodie. I'm not giving it away or selling it but I plan to save it for our future child. It is 50% Peruvian Llama, 50% wool and it feels so nice. I've never had this nice of yarn before and I really think the color is gorgeous, too, albeit hard to find.

Instead of kaboshing everything I made for Omaha Fashion Week this year, I'm just making it for the future kids and saving it for whenever that happens. It's close enough to Try-Time to start preparing tangible things for a baby, in our opinion. We also ran into (almost literally) a yard sale yesterday and found a vintage high chair that is EFFING BEAUTIFUL for $20. It's baby blue, has a maple tray, and even converts to a chair/table combo.

I know a lot of the baby things I'm making and finding are blue, but since we're going gender-neutral with our parenting style I don't think it matters. I'll have pictures of the high chair after I clean it up! BRACE YO'SELF! It's PURTY!

Future Baby Post at H. and S.

It's too soon for any kind of baby-related announcement BUT...

We're talking about it.
I kind of touched on the plans for it in my How-and-When post from a couple weeks ago but I just want to talk about it MOAAARRR! I'm getting baby-crazy and I'll be the first to admit that... however I am excited to go on vacation, paint the kitchen, pay off the debt and all the other things that will happen before trying for a baby.

When we're talking about the baby, Shawn and I have come up with some really snazzy ideas:
  • Prepare freezer meals in the months before the baby is born so that we don't have to cook to eat a good nutritious meal while we are sleep-deprived and covered in dry spit-up.
  • Make the smaller "office" room into the nursery... bye HiLLjO office... :o/
  • Make a baby hammock like this one.
  • Save up to buy things like this pack of cloth diapers so we don't have to buy them EVER again.
  • Get a laundry tub-sink for the laundry room to soak cloth diapers after use.
  • Use the aqua I was insanely in love with as a trim color for the main wall color in the baby room.
If you want to see my latest nursery brainstorm I posted it at H. and S. along with the other posts about our home and how we live, decorate and EAT! If you want to see my daily baby thoughts be sure to check out my BABY board on Pinterest!
